Two Pennies and a Buck

A voice called out from friendly lips

I knew it not at all

Two Pennies from those lips came falling

into my wayward hand

her eyes had closed unexpectedly

my voice came apart from worry

Two Pennies lay on the ground unnoticed

A friend called late and missed the fight

his regret became an anchor

A smoke or a drink may have saved Two Pennies

and the moon offers small comfort

A friend gave a Buck when a word would have done

unwalked paths need no bridges

forgotten promises breed not forgiveness
