That One Summer

Sweet nostalgia, done beautifully by Nicole Lyons

The Lithium Chronicles

I had yet to feel
your sweat on my neck,
but I knew I loved you already.
Like red roses pulling
yellow streaks, and green thumbs
dipped in sugar,
I loved you.
Like desperate phone calls
made to lonely operators
in the middle of the night,
just this side of the beach,
I loved you.
You were my lime green popsicle
and the reason I learned
how to fake a cough
that summer,
and why I timed it perfectly.
Between the fighting upstairs
and the whistling on the tracks,
I coughed, and I flushed,
and then I ran,
to you, waiting
behind yellow lights
and humming
songs about fallen angels,
and my God,
how I loved you.
